Campers Content Review

As someone who loves going on outdoor adventures with friends, I recently had the pleasure of experiencing the Faros drive away awning from Vango firsthand. A close friend of mine purchased the awning for their VW camper and we went on a long weekend away in the Lake District to test it out. From its lightweight design to its waterproof features, there’s so many aspects of this awning I want to cover. Here’s my in depth review based on its key features, offering insights from my personal perspective.

What Is It Used For?

Lightweight, Compact, and Waterproof:
The Faros awning boasts an impressive combination of lightweight construction and compact design, making it incredibly easy to transport and set up. The Faros is classed as a lightweight polysester touring awning. Polyester fabric is commonly used in the production of drive away awnings due to its lightweight and compact nature, making it ideal for touring campers. It offers convenience and portability, so it’s ideal for those shorter trips away.

What Vehicle Is It For?

The Faros is designed for Vans and motorhomes with an awning rail height of 180-210cm. This is classed as a low awning so is perfect for VW Transporters and similar height vehicles.

It also comes with multiple vehicle attachment methods. All Vango awnings come with pre attached 6mm kador, 8M over vehicle straps, roof bar attachment tabs and sleeve for pole & clamp kit system. This ensures our awnings are compatible with any vehicle

How Does It Handle The Weather?

The Faros polyester fabric has a 70 Denier rating. Denier is the measurement of how thick the fibres are that make up the fabric. 70 Denier is the entry level fabric for drive away awnings, so is ideal for summer touring and short trips. The compromise is this, lower Denier fabrics make the awning lightweight and compact however aren’t as durable and suited to the colder months as higher Denier awnings. If you’re wanting something you can use through the winter months and for longer trips away then it might be worth considering an awing with a higher Denier. The Faros will serve perfect for those who want to primarily use it over the warmer months for shorter breaks.

Rain

The Faros has a hydrostatic head rating of 3000MM. Hydrostatic head is a measurement of how waterproof a fabric is. A rating of 3000MM is very good as anything 3000MM and above can handle pretty much any rain Europe can throw at it. The Lake District of course provided us with some heavy downpours and the Faros stayed completely dry and comfortable even during the heavy rain showers. Its weatherproofing capabilities allow you to explore the outdoors without worrying about unpredictable weather conditions.
The Faros also has a sewn in groundsheet which provides a bug and draught free environment, enhancing comfort and protection against the elements. The external storm skirt offered all round protection which also came in very handy while camping in the Lakes!

Wind

The Faros comes with a TBSII (Tension Band System). This is anther great piece of technology Vango have created and proved to be a lifesaver during adverse weather conditions, particularly strong, changeable winds like we had in the Lakes. Its ability to brace the beam or pole at three points prevented nearly all sideways movement, make the awning extremely stable. You can also adjust the Tension Band System depending on weather conditions and this is a really straightforward process.

The Faros also comes with a bracer pole to enhance stability. This Ensured that the awning remained secure and steady, even in bad wind. This additional reinforcement really gave me confidence in the awning’s reliability! There’s no surprise it performed well in the wind and ran too, because the Faros is fully wind and rain tested. The awning underwent rigorous wind and rain testing to the European standard.

Heat

The Faros has both high and low ventilation panels to promote airflow. This massively reduced the condensation when it was cold outside and nice and warm within the awning. The Faros also has a mesh front door that’s equipped with an internal mesh fly screen. The mesh front door provided excellent ventilation while keeping pesky bugs at bay.

It’s worth mentioning here that one of the reasons 70 Denier fabric isn’t suitable for static or long-term seasonal pitching because of UV degradation.

Ease Of Use

Pitching

You start by laying out the awning next to your vehicle, ensuring it’s aligned properly and there’s enough space for the attachment. The attachment process is straightforward, you secure it to your vehicle’s roof rack or awning rail using the provided adjustable straps or hooks. The design is intuitive, and you quickly understand how everything fits together.

Next, you extend the awning poles and slot them into place. The poles are color-coded or clearly marked, so you easily match them to the corresponding sleeves or connectors on the awning. The Vango Fibreglass Poles are strong, light, and create reliable structure even in adverse conditions.

With the poles in position, you begin to raise the awning, adjusting the tension as needed to ensure a snug fit. The guy ropes are bright coloured to provide clear visibility in limited light to prevent a tripping hazard. Once adjusted correctly they ensure stability in high winds. There’s also high quality steel pegs provided with the awning help you stabilise it. Once practised its possible to pitch this lightweight awning in around 15 minutes!

The tunnel adjustment strap also helped create a neater looking tunnel and a tighter fit to the vehicle, which increased both the aesthetics and functionality. It was a small yet thoughtful detail that made a big difference in the overall appearance and performance of the awning.

Packing

Packing up the Faros awning was a hassle free experience, thanks to the oversized carry bag provided. This thoughtful addition made storing and transporting the awning effortless and I wish other brands would take note of this! There’s nothing worse than trying to pack a damp awning into an undersized bag at the end of a trip, so thank you Vango!

Clever Access

The Faros come with easy access doors. The inclusion of easy access doors with flat entry access is a thoughtful addition that caters to individuals with reduced mobility, wheelchairs, or prams. I love the fact that this awning is so inclusive and I personally found these doors to be incredibly convenient when carrying camping equipment in and out of the awning!

The Faros also has two doors in the tunnel attachment to the vehicle. The inclusion of two doors provided convenient access to the front or back of the vehicle, enhancing accessibility and convenience. This thoughtful design feature made it easier to access essential items stored in the vehicle without having to navigate through the entire awning.

Drive Away Functionality

My friend bought a drive away kit alongside the awning on Amazon. It’s a really cheap addition and meant we could detach the tunnel area of the awning from the vehicle, allowing the awning to stand free as we explored for the day. The Vango Faros has a roll away connection tunnel. This feature added flexibility and convenience to our camping setup, allowing us to easily transition between driving and camping modes.

Other clever Features

King Pole Door
The king pole door is a great addition to this awning! We used it as a shelter both when it was sunny and lightly raining. This added functionality allowed us so much more freedom and space, making the whole trip more enjoyable.

Privacy Curtains
A really simple but great feature on the awning. When open, loads of light is let into the awning but when closed you have that privacy have a clothes change etc

Diamond Clear Windows
One of the standout features of the Faros awning is its Diamond Clear windows! Another piece of Vango technology which maximises light and visibility, creating a bright and airy environment inside the awning. Throughout our camping trip, we appreciated the abundance of natural light (when we had it) filtering through these windows! It made the space feel more inviting and spacious.

Lantern Hanging Points
Again another extremely simple feature which we were grateful for! Strategically placed lantern hanging points meant we weren’t walking around with head torches on the whole time on a night!

Conclusion

The Faros II Drive Away Awning from Vango is absolutely great value for money! It completely enhanced our camping trip away and at the fraction of the cost of other drive away awnings. Vango are renowned for their high quality products and have been awning industry leaders for a long time now. With the Faros you get Vango’s innovation and quality, from its lightweight and compact design to its waterproof construction, you get it all! When I was seeking shelter from the elements, enjoying the sunshine, or simply wanting the extra storage space, the Faros awning proved to be an indispensable companion on our camping adventure!
